Epping, New Hampshire (June 13, 2015) - It's only been 10 weeks since Pro Stock veteran Larry Morgan claimed victory at the 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, but the driver of the eye-catching FireAde Camaro says it seems like an eternity.
"I've gone longer stretches before without a win and it was easier to live with than not winning in these last five races we've had since Charlotte," Morgan said. "The reason being that this car should be winning a lot. It's that good. The car is great, our sponsor is the best one out there and the horsepower we're getting from Gray Motorsports is on par with anyone in the pits.
"We wanted to win in the past; we expect to win nowadays. That's the difference."
Morgan will begin his quest for his second victory of the season from the No. 9 qualifying position at the New England Nationals. His best run in four competitive rounds of time trials was 6.569 at 212.69 mph. He'll open eliminations opposite past world champion Allen Johnson, who qualified eighth with a 6.563 at 212.26 mph.
"My son Nick is doing a great job of tuning this car," Morgan said. "It's not easy to harness this much horsepower and figure out how to apply it to the racing surface every weekend, especially now that we're getting into the summer months. The hotter it gets, the harder it is to tune the car.
"When it's cool out there, you can just pound all you got into the track and it'll stick. When it gets a little hot and slick, you have to calm it down a little, which goes against the way we're all wired. Nick's been on top of it and as this race goes along he's closer and closer to where we want to be."
The only thing missing from the team this weekend is Morgan's No. 1 supporter, FireAde founder Ron Thames.
"We've done such a good job promoting FireAde that Ron's too busy to come to the races any more," Morgan said with a laugh. "But that's a good thing. He's over in Germany right now working on some international deals. There'd be nothing better than calling him in the middle of the night over there and telling him we won again.
"I've said all year long, we've got the best of everything on this team. We need to keep pounding away and get another win. Tomorrow would be just fine with me."
ESPN2 will broadcast all the qualifying action from 7:30-10 p.m., Saturday, and the elimination rounds from 5-8 p.m., Sunday.
