TOPEKA, Kan. (May 20) - After a rain-delayed NHRA Southern Nationals, Lucas Oil/MAVTV Pro Stock driver Larry Morgan is excited to return to a track where he has enjoyed great success, Heartland Park Topeka, for the NHRA Kansas Nationals, May 23-25.
The Lucas Oil/MAVTV Mustang has visited Victory Lane in Kansas before, in 2008, and has competed in numerous semifinal matchups as well. Morgan knows that this weekend is the best chance he has to turn around his luck this season.
"I honestly can't wait to get to Topeka this weekend," Morgan said. "I've always seemed to do really well at that track, and I hope to have the same kind of results during this trip.
"This season hasn't gone too great when you look at our results on paper. I know what kind of power we have under the hood; our luck just hasn't been there to help out. It's frustrating but I know we'll be alright and keep moving on."
The 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season is nearing a busy time, when there is less and less time between races. That limits the chances for teams, including Morgan's, to test and prepare for the next event.
"I like to test whenever I can before a race, but there just isn't enough time this week," Morgan said. "Even if Atlanta hadn't taken an extra day because of rain, I still wouldn't have been able to test. The week is just too short to really make a test session worthwhile. At this point, we're going to head home and make sure the car is ready to roll for Topeka."
Qualifying rounds for the NHRA Kansas Nationals are set for 4:30 and 7 p.m., Friday, and 1:30 and 4 p.m., Saturday. Both qualifying and elimination action will be broadcast on ESPN2.
